Sunday School and Youth Group students begin with Worship at 10:00 am in our Sanctuary, except the first Sunday of the month, when they go to Church School first. The fifth Sundays of the month are children-friendly services for the entire family with no Church School classes.
Nursery care is available during the Worship Service with a responsible, caring adult volunteer. Nursery Coordinator is Mrs. Shirley Bock. The Nursery is a clean, safe and fun room for infants and toddlers to play or rest.
Children and Worship
We treasure our children and youth, and we honor the unique gifts each one brings to our community. Our Church School ministry fosters a sense of belonging and encourages love, generosity, and commitment with God’s light guiding our path.
We welcome children of all ages in worship, and we celebrate their presence. On most Sundays, there is an interactive Children’s Message. Following this Message, children and teens are invited to go to their classrooms.
Children and Communion
Athol Congregational Church has a long tradition of an open communion table. All are invited to share in this meal. We welcome children to share in this tradition.
School Aged Children
Athol Congregational Church utilizes “Grow, Proclaim, Serve-One Room Sunday School” Bible-based curriculum for Sunday School. The group is divided into two areas: Bible Story Time and Craft/Activity Time with Snack & Prayer Time completing their morning. This United Church of Christ curriculum incorporates Bible stories, activities, crafts, media, and games into a full faith experience for children. With Grow, Proclaim, Serve! children will develop the skills to unlock the Bible message and grow their faith by leaps and bounds. As children grow in mind and body, they also grow in heart and soul. Grow, Proclaim, Serve! will nourish and enrich children, from birth through tweens, in faith so they can proclaim the good news of God’s love and serve God and neighbor. Children will realize their faith goes with them as they grow. We are blessed with Adult Station Leaders who care deeply about our children and their faith development.
The Summer Church program features an adult leader to help children enjoy a Christian Craft and/or Game with Snacks provided.
We also feature Vacation Bible Camp during School summer vacation that highlights Bible-themed stations to include Story, Craft, Game, Mission Project, and Snack.
The Youth Group uses “Seasons of the Spirit,” a Bible-based curriculum. Youth Group is offered for 7th through 12th grade students. The group is led by Jan Doody, who offers thought-provoking bible lessons to guide teens on their life path using skits, games, open discussion and community service.
The Youth Group participates in Community Meals, Raking Service Project for senior church members, 30 Hour Famine supporting World Vision, Progressive Suppers, and Mystery Dinners as well as multi-age events. The first Sunday of each month are celebrated with a Youth Group Breakfast in which the teens prepare and share breakfast.
Church Step Program
BAPTISM: Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship to God. We are welcomed into the grace of God.
BIBLE RECEIPT: First and Second Grade children are given a Children’s Bible to study at home and bring with them to Sunday School to follow along with the lesson.
ACOLYTE STEP: Fourth through Sixth Grade children are taught the process of lighting God’s candle (also called Acolyte) on the Church altar. They receive a special stole to wear while performing this task during their installment service.
JUNIOR DEACON STEP: Sixth through Seventh Grade children are taught the jobs of being a Church Deacon. Jobs include ushering during worship service, greeting church goers upon entering Church, reading Scripture (also called Liturgist), assisting with assembling holiday baskets and visiting with home-bound members.
CONFIRMATION STEP: Eighth grade youth and higher are encouraged to join our Church through Confirmation. The program includes lessons, mentoring with an adult, retreats and the final ceremony. Confirmation is the choice to commit to our baptismal gifts and is a rite of initiation or passage into the Church Family. Confirmed youth become full Deacons of our Church.
We hold monthly inter-generational family events including dramatic presentations, hikes, trips to places like Red Apple Farm, Bowling, Movies, Sliding, Picnics, Swimming and the Heifer Project farm in Rutland, Massachusetts. Our focus is to bring families closer to each other as well as foster Christian Fellowship. Family and Youth Group Events are offered to other area Church’s to bond Christian children and teens and maximize each Church’s resources and staffing.
Holiday Programs are open to the Community and area children. These programs showcase child and youth drama and/or singing talent.
